1927 - The first patent for an open throat frame was issued in 1928. From this experimental point on, the racquet models changed more frequently, with a gadget here, a gadget there. Tennis had leaped the Atlantic on the luxury liners, many times by now, and the depth and scope with which lawn tennis had grabbed the sporting class of the world was evident in front page news. This early open throat frame shows heavily reinforced shoulders, now that the swing speeds and frequent play demanded a sturdier racquet.
