Tilt Top

Tilt Top Racquet, c. 1880

1883 - As the court tennis players took to the new game through out the 1870's, they brought their racquets with them.  In court tennis the walls were in the way and the slightly tilted or lopsided racquets helped to retrieve a ball close to the wall.  These frames are typical during the slow transition to  manufactured,  bigger headed frames, and the more wide-open nature of the play in lawn tennis. This frame, left, has a slight tilt to it, and the thin smooth handle, the lack of a company mark and solid wedge, make it an early 1880's collectible.
